iphone 1.1.3 - to be released?

Apple may be preparing a significant update for the iPhone as early as this weekend that will have some heavily requested features, according to a claim from CNET France. The site points to multiple reports that a 1.1.3 upgrade for the iPhone will appear by Saturday which adds both a disk mode for storing general data on the device and a voice recording mode for capturing lectures or voice memos. The disk feature behaves like the equivalent for iPods and will still block users from simply dragging and dropping content to load the phone with playable music, CNET says. Enabling disk mode should still allow knowledgeable users to browse the content on the phone, though this is not expected to be of any use to the hacking community, which has already gained access to the phone's software.

While unverified, the reported release would come roughly a month after the 1.1.2 update that added international keyboard support and other minor upgrades to the iPhone for its launches in Germany and the UK. The release would be at least partly consistent with Apple's past practices, as the firm released the 1.1.2 update towards the end of the week.

It is also likely to break existing modifications to the firmware that allow the iPhone to run third-party code or unlock the device to run with carriers outside of those approved by Apple.

Reviewed on 9/12/07 Release date: 7/23/07 Last year, we liked the Logitech VX Revolution Cordless Laser Mouse so much that we gave it an Editors' Choice award. Now the company's follow-up to that device, the smaller VX Nano, has likewise earned our affections and the Editors' Choice designation. Like the Revolution, the Nano provides comfortable contours, plenty of buttons, and a storage space for its tiny wireless receiver. To that the VX Nano adds a gliding scroll wheel that's even easier to use, as well as a more compact shape that's accessible to both left- and right-handed mousers. Though at $70 it's far more expensive than other notebook mice, the Logitech VX Nano represents the ultimate in portability for mousing on the go.

Measuring 4 inches long, 2.4 inches wide, and just over an inch thick, the Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse is about the size of a bar of soap, which makes it extremely portable. That's also just about the smallest you can make a travel mouse without sacrificing user comfort; the VX Nano felt comfortable for our medium-size hands, though large-handed users might prefer the slighter bigger VX Revolution. We prefer to mouse with our left hand, so we really appreciate the VX Nano's ambidextrous contours, which are comfortable for both left- and right-handed users--a major advantage over the VX Revolution, whose shape accommodates only right-handed mousing.

The Nano's USB receiver is the tiniest we've seen. The actual USB plug makes up most of its 0.8-inch length, and when you plug in the receiver less than 0.3 inch--about the radius of a dime--sticks out. At that size, you can easily leave the receiver plugged into your notebook, even when you're on the move. The receiver also stashes into a storage slot under the mouse's battery cover; we like that the mouse automatically turns off when the receiver is stowed, which saves power and ensures the mouse won't accidentally turn on when it's in your bag. To protect the mouse while in transit, Logitech provides a handy neoprene case.

Like all VX mice, the VX Nano incorporates Logitech's "nearly frictionless" scroll wheel, which lets you scroll through massive documents at extraordinary speeds. With this feature, there's no tactile feedback on the wheel: give it a flick, and it just keeps spinning. We averaged 31 pages per spin while scrolling through a 300-page PDF, and it took just two spins to reach the bottom of our 350-message inbox. If you want more controlled scrolling, just press the scroll wheel straight down to switch into a traditional click-wheel mode. This easy switching between gliding and clicking is a big improvement over the VX Revolution, which requires you to flip a switch on the bottom of the mouse to change scroll modes.

The VX Nano features high-precision laser tracking that we found to be very responsive on our desk, a notepad, and our pants leg. There's a handy LED battery meter on the top of the mouse, so you know how much juice you have left. (Logitech claims the mouse will run for 6 months on two AAA batteries.) Though you can use the VX Nano without any setup--just plug in the USB receiver to an available port and go--installing Logitech's Set Point software, available for both Windows and Mac, makes all of the mouse's five buttons programmable.

Blake gives USA one hand on the Cup
James Blake prevailed in an tight battle with Mikhail Youzhny to give USA a 2-0 overnight lead after the first day of the 2007 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final.

In a match that contained three consecutive tiebreaks, the American held his nerve for a 63 76 67 76 victory to maintain USA's perfect start after his compatriot Andy Roddick defeated Dmitry Tursunov in the opening rubber.

This victory was one of the defining moments of James Blakes career and puts the USA team firmly in the driving seat. “I got to say this is probably my biggest win. No, I'm not going to say probably, I'm going to say this is the biggest win of my career. I wanted to prove that I was tough enough to hang in a tough situation, in a big match, in a final that I've never even been in before. It made a big difference to have the confidence of my teammates and my captain and my family here.”

Blake came out all guns blazing in the opening set, completing blowing the Russian off court, racing to a three nil lead. With his trademark backhand working especially effectively, it was also Blake’s out and out athleticism, which was particularly evident. Youzhny’s game started out nervously and the occasion initially did definitely seem to get to him, but gradually he got his technique up and running, but too late in the first set to make any difference.

The second set went with serve all the way up until the tiebreak, where Blake managed to force the Russian into a handful of unforced errors to take it. The third set consisted of probably the best tennis of the match with both players timing the ball cleanly. Both were mixing up their tactics effectively with numerous backhand-to-backhand slice rallies that were again and again on a knife-edge. This time it was Yuouzhny who took the tiebreak by the scruff of the neck, bringing himself and his country back into the tie. Furthermore, with Blake’s poor record in five setters, it was always going to be a case of the longer the match went on, the better chance he had.

As the match went through the three-hour barrier in the fourth set, it was Blake who took a break of serve to go 54 up, but couldn’t close the match out as Youzhny broke back immediately. In the tiebreak, it was Blake’s serve that was the deciding factor, as it had been through the majority of the encounter, winning 82% of points on first serve, including 16 aces.

“To see James come up and play a much tougher match as far as the score and mentally to just handle it so well, you know, I couldn't be prouder, said USA captain Patrick McEnroe, who was constantly fist pumping Blake at the side of the court.

Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev may well be now rueing not playing world No. 4 Dimitry Tursonov in the single, but held strong with his convictions. “Well, we were not counting on Tursunov so much as counting on Youzhny winning, and we were very close to working out that way. They were very even. It's just that fortune went to Blake. I think if we'd have had a fifth set, we would have won. We had a good chance of winning,” he said.

However, it is the American captain who goes into Sunday, knowing that one more point from the Bryan brothers in the doubles will secure a Davis Cup triumph for USA. They are scheduled to take on Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko, but the nominations can be changed up to an hour before play, which is due to start at 12.30pm. There has only been one team that has ever come back from 2-0 down in a final and that was in 1939. This looks like mission impossible for the Russians.
